The body material is what most determines a chandelier's lifespan and appearance. Crystals, glass or the light source can be replaced over time, but the body is the chandelier's skeleton. In this article we compare the three most commonly used body materials, their advantages and the spaces where each is preferred.

Brass: warm tones and classic elegance

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Thanks to its natural yellow tone, workability and corrosion resistance, it has long been used in classic and Ottoman-style chandeliers. It can be applied in different finishes: polished, antiqued (patinated) or gold-plated.

  • Advantages: Warm, rich appearance, suitability for fine detailing, long service life.
  • Note: It can naturally darken over time; protection with lacquer or plating and regular maintenance are recommended.
  • Where: Mosque chandeliers, mansions, waterfront residences, classic hotels and halls.

Stainless steel: modern and durable

With its high strength and resistance to rust, stainless steel stands out in large-diameter and modern chandeliers. It can be finished as mirror-polished, satin (brushed) or PVD-coated in colours such as gold, champagne and black.

  • Advantages: Light yet strong supporting structure, resistance to humid environments, easy cleaning.
  • Note: It is not as flexible as brass for very fine classic ornamentation; the design needs to be planned accordingly.
  • Where: Modern mosques, hotel lobbies, wedding venues and ballrooms, commercial spaces with high ceilings.

Wrought iron: craftsmanship and character

Wrought iron bodies are shaped from forged or bent iron. With their curving forms and handcrafted feel, they add character to rustic, classic and mansion-style spaces. The surface is usually protected with electrostatic powder coating.

  • Advantages: Strong silhouette, handmade look, wide range of colour options.
  • Note: Because of its weight, the ceiling fixing and suspension system must be calculated correctly.
  • Where: Mansions, restaurants, boutique hotels, classic and rustic interiors.

Other materials and complementary details

In addition to the body, crystals, glass globes, acrylic panels and LED strips define the chandelier's lighting character. For example, in mosque chandeliers with Quranic verses, acrylic and LED strips are placed behind laser-cut metal plates so that the calligraphy is lit from within. Depending on the project, aluminium, wood or combinations of different metals can also be used.

Which material should you choose?

  • For a classic, warm and rich effect: brass.
  • For modern lines, large diameters and easy maintenance: stainless steel.
  • For a handcrafted feel and a strong silhouette: wrought iron.

The right choice depends on the architecture of the space, humidity and usage conditions, and the desired look. In our custom chandelier design process, we determine the material together according to the space and present it for your approval with samples and 3D drawings.
