A well-maintained chandelier keeps its first-day sparkle for years.

Crystal chandelier cleaning and maintenance - Yön Avize

Whether in a mosque, hotel, wedding hall or home, chandeliers gradually lose their shine because of dust, humidity and handling. In this guide, Yön Avize, a custom chandelier manufacturer since 2013, explains how to clean crystal, brass and stainless steel chandeliers safely and correctly.

1. Safety first

Before cleaning, switch off the chandelier at the circuit breaker and let the bulbs cool down. For high ceilings, use a stable scaffold or platform; in very tall spaces such as mosque domes and hotel lobbies, it is safest to leave the work to an experienced team. Never hang from the chandelier or put weight on its frame.

2. Regular dusting

Light dusting every few weeks reduces the need for deep cleaning. A dry, soft microfibre cloth or a soft brush is enough. As dust builds up, the crystals refract less light and the chandelier looks dull.

3. Cleaning the crystals

Handle the crystals with cotton gloves to avoid fingerprints. Crystals that cannot be wiped in place can be removed without disturbing the strands, washed in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, rinsed and dried with a lint-free cloth. Photographing the crystals before removing them makes it easier to restore the layout.

4. Brass and stainless steel frames

Wipe brass frames with a dry, soft cloth; abrasive sponges and ammonia-based or acidic cleaners can damage the surface. Stainless steel frames can be wiped with mildly soapy water and dried. For both materials, apply the cleaner to the cloth rather than spraying it onto the chandelier, so that no liquid reaches the sockets or wiring.

5. LED and electrical checks

LEDs that do not light or that flicker may point to a driver or connection problem. The suspension system, connection points and wiring should be checked by an electrician at regular intervals, especially for large and heavy chandeliers.

6. How often?

In homes, a thorough clean once or twice a year is usually enough. In busy spaces that are lit for long hours, such as mosques, hotels and wedding halls, cleaning and checks should be planned more often. Chandeliers near kitchens or humid areas get dirty faster.

Designing for easy maintenance

Easy maintenance is best planned at the design stage. When we design our chandeliers, we choose removable crystal strands, long-life LED and brass or stainless steel frames to make upkeep easier, even under high ceilings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean a crystal chandelier with glass cleaner? It is not recommended; some cleaners can leave marks on crystal and metal surfaces. Lukewarm water with mild detergent is safer.

Can I clean the chandelier myself? Yes, for home chandeliers within easy reach. For very high ceilings and large chandeliers, get professional help for safety.
