How to Choose a Staircase Chandelier: Crystal and Spiral Designs

A stairwell is often the tallest and most visible space in a villa, hotel or home.

Cascade crystal chandelier hanging in a stairwell - Yön Avize

A staircase chandelier lights this void from top to bottom, and because it is the first thing guests see at the entrance, it sets the character of the whole interior. In this guide, Yön Avize, a custom chandelier manufacturer since 2013, explains how a crystal or spiral chandelier is planned for a stairwell.

1. Height and width of the stairwell

The first step is to measure the total height and width of the stairwell and locate the ceiling suspension point. The chandelier is usually sized to fill most of the void while keeping a safe distance from people on the stairs and from the railing. That is why every project starts with the stairwell dimensions and photos taken from different floors.

2. Spiral, cascade or tiered form

In narrow, tall stairwells, vertical spiral or cascade crystal chandeliers work best, as the light can be seen from every floor. Wider voids suit tiered chandeliers or clusters hanging at different heights. The form is chosen according to the turn of the staircase and the architecture.

3. Crystal and light

Crystals refract the light and create sparkle along the whole void. Long-life LED lighting reduces the need to change bulbs in tall, hard-to-reach stairwells. Light colour and brightness are chosen to suit the wall and floor finishes.

4. Materials, weight and suspension

We make the frames in brass or stainless steel. For long chandeliers, weight and the suspension system are part of the design, and the load-bearing ceiling point is checked on site. Wrought iron models are also a popular choice for stairwells in villas with classic architecture.

5. Access for cleaning and maintenance

Because a staircase chandelier hangs high, cleaning and maintenance are planned at the design stage: removable crystal strands and LED lighting make upkeep much easier over the years.

6. 3D design approval, production and installation

Length, diameter, crystal layout and light colour are finalised in a 3D drawing and sent for approval. After approval, the chandelier is produced in our workshop in Tekkeköy, Samsun, and installed by our own team.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need for a staircase chandelier quote? The stairwell height and width, the ceiling suspension point and photos taken from different floors are enough.

Can the chandelier be replaced in an existing home? Yes. The load-bearing point and electrical connection are checked, and a chandelier is designed to fit the existing stairwell.
